A married suburban wife meets a symbolic crossroad in her life that leads her down the path of adultery with a much younger man. It’s only a matter of time before her devoted husband begins to suspect something has gone awry. The truth becomes difficult to decipher, and careless becomes Connies actions. Will she be caught, or will she come to her senses and return to her life of comfort peace?

Connie Sumner (Diane Lane) a tout pour être heureuse : un mari aimant et qui a professionnellement réussi (Richard Gere) avec qui elle a déjà vécu 11 ans de mariage, un fils adorable et une spacieuse maison dans une banlieue cossue et tranquille de New York. Lors d'une journée venteuse à Manhattan, elle tombe et se blesse au genou. Elle est secourue par un jeune français, Paul Martel (Olivier Martinez), marchand de livres anciens, qui la soigne. D'abord fidèle à son mari, elle résiste au charme masculin du séducteur. Mais entre désir et remords, elle cède finalement au désir et commet l'irréparable. Son mari, Edward, remarque les petits changements dans les habitudes de sa femme, et commence à se douter de ce qui se passe. Après avoir loué les services d'un détective, les photos de sa femme prise sur le fait avec son amant confirment ses doutes. Au moment où Connie, prise de culpabilité et se rendant compte qu'elle est en train de briser le bonheur de sa famille, décide de mettre un terme à sa relation secrète, Edward rend visite à l'amant de sa femme...
