Serge, après avoir mené avec sa bande, dans une demeure américaine cossue, une opération meurtrière pour la compte de la Mafia, est envoyé en France pour s'occuper d'Emery, un gros trafiquant de drogue local. Dans l'avion, il fait la connaissance de Jane, la fille d'un diplomate. Lorsqu'il est enlevé, à son arrivée à l'aéroport, par deux hommes de main d'Emery puis blessé pendant sa fuite, Serge fait appel à Jane. Elle l'héberge et le soigne chez elle. Ils deviennent amants. Ils sont bientôt rejoints par Paul, lui aussi en provenance des Etats-Unis, pour aider Serge dans sa mission. Ils débusquent ensemble le principal revendeur de drogue, un danseur de l'Opéra, lequel leur indique, sous la contrainte, l'emplacement du laboratoire de stupéfiants. Après avoir fait sauté ce dernier, Serge devient la cible d'Emery et d'un inspecteur de police.

Serge (Serge Gainsbourg) is sent to France by New York mobsters to secure a shipment of heroin. The supplier in France is being ripped off by a middleman who has gone into business for himself. His first order of business is to wipe out the customers of a drug house who have bought their drugs from a rival dealer. After slaying the bunch, with the help of a maniacal hippie (Paul Nicholas), he is off to Paris. Someone tips off the rival gang of Serge's arrival and he is met at the airport by two thugs. A pretty woman he met on the plane (Jane Birkin) finds him slumped in his car and takes him home with her. The two soon are entwined in a passionate embrace. Emery (Curt Jurgens) is the French drug kingpin who along with Serge is sought by the inspector (Gabriele Ferzetti).
