Dziennikarz sportowy (Andrzej) wraz z zona (Krystyna) oraz przygodnie napotkanym autostopowiczem wyruszaja na krótki rejs jachtem. Swiatopoglad dziennikarza i autostopowicza bardzo sie róznia. Dochodzi do klótni w czasie, której uderzony przez Andrzeja chlopak wpada do wody. Zdenerwowany mezczyzna szuka ciala. Kiedy jednak go nie odnajduje, plynie do brzegu, by zawiadomic policje. W czasie jego nieobecnosci chlopak wraca na poklad jachtu, gdzie zostala zona Andrzeja. Miedzy tymi dwojgiem dochodzi do zblizenia. O poranku Krystyna plynie do przystani, gdzie informuje Andrzeja, ze go zdradzila. Ten nie chce, a przede wszystkim nie moze uwierzyc, ze to zrobila.

En 1962, il réalise son premier long-métrage, Le Couteau dans l'eau, co-écrit avec Jerzy Skolimowski et dont la musique est composée par son ami Krzysztof Komeda (mort en 1969). Il y met en scène les rapports de forces entre un journaliste sportif brutal et un étudiant arrogant sur un voilier. Le film est mal accueilli en Pologne bien qu'il ne soit pas un réquisitoire explicite du mode de vie socialiste. Mais il fait planer un climat d'insécurité et laisse en suspens l'idée de tension sociale et de lutte de classes que les régimes communistes prétendent avoir abolie. Après un succès international et un prix obtenu à la Mostra de Venise, Le Couteau dans l'eau est projeté officiellement au Festival de New York, se voit choisi pour faire la couverture du Time Magazine et est nominé pour l'Oscar du meilleur film étranger.

(Andrzej (Niemczyk) and Krystyna (Umecka) are driving to a lake to go sailing when they come upon a young man hitchhiking in the middle of the road. After nearly hitting him, Andrzej invites the young man to pick his seat and to take a nap while they continue driving. When they arrive at the docks, instead of leaving the young man behind, Andrzej invites him to sail with them for the day. The young man accepts the offer, and, not knowing much about sailing, is forced to learn many hard lessons from Andrzej.)
