The entire opera is a treasure, and they couldn't have picked a better cast. Vivica Genaux, Elina Garanca, and David Daniels are especially strong, and Fabio Biondi's orchestra is always clean and polished. The recording quality is also top-notch. It's unlike me not to offer some kind of a criticism, but I can't think of one for this recording. Highly recommended.

POWERFULLY TRAGIC AND HIGHLY ROMANTIC DRAMA!

In 1734 Vivaldi was made the official impressario of the recently opened 'Teatro Filarmonico' in Verona. It was the first public opera house in that city and it opened its doors performing Vivaldi's 'La fida ninfa'.Entrusted with the task of organising the theatre's 1735 Carnival Season, he programmed 2 of his works with clear political overtones: an ode to Italian freedom with "Adelaide" and a symbolic hymn of resistance against an invader in the shape of 'Bajazet'.

The care that Vivaldi lavished on 'Bajazet' can be seen most clearly in the astonishing richness of the recitatives. 'Recitativo secco', which carries the action forward and brings to life the relationships between the characters, was the basis on which Vivaldi's operas rested, and in 'Bajazet', his belief in the primacy of the recitative took him to expressive heights rarely attained by his contemporaries.

What a great showcase for the voice of David Daniels!!!!And I thought he could only be that good singing Handel; silly me!!!!. Fabio Biondi with his great showmanship surely was THE ONE to put this excellent Vivaldi opera together. The voices he chose are absolutely the best and the most dramatically exciting for these roles. There are many powerful scenes since the story is tragic and romantic so the arias reflect all of this drama; arias such as Tamerlano's (Daniels)aria "Barbaro traditor" ( Villianous traitor) in which Tamerlano denounces both Bajazet and Asteria for their individual attempts to kill themselves as well as an attempt on his life. There are too many excitings musical moments to mention all, but having the accompanying rehearsal DVD is great!!!. I hope that this becomes a trend. Don't miss having this wonderful listening experience.
