Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers had a second coming in the early- and mid-'80s with lineups that featured either Wynton and Branford Marsalis or Terence Blanchard and Donald Harrison. This collection features selections from live performances by both groups at various points in their tenures. It is of special interest to note that most of the cuts were recorded at San Francisco's famed Keystone Korner, a particularly special venue for Blakey in his later career. Both bands rival the Messengers' heyday 20-odd years earlier. Blakey, by then an elder statesman and legend of the jazz world, is as forceful and musically demanding as ever, driving his young charges with the vigor of a man half his age. This is a lovingly assembled collection of a band that kept on mining young talent to the end, and a testament to Blakey's aura as jazz's greatest father figure.
