As an economic historian by training and inclination, I have found myself increasingly drawn toward the Jewish aspects of the economic development of the Western world. For far too long Jewish economic history has been viewed as an appendage of the historical model-builders, ranging in infinite gradations from the “fossil of history” views of the Toynbee school to the dominant role suggested by the Sombartians; but in vain have I waited for an abler pen than mine to take an objective stance within the broad sweep of socioeconomic history.
