Though Berlioz’s mélodies have attracted only sporadic attention over the decades, most of it has been first-rate, beginning with a venerable 1968 go at the nine numbers on poems by Thomas Moore, which the composer put together as Irlande, op. 2, featuring April Cantelo, Helen Watts, Robert Tear, Richard Salter, Viola Tunnard, and the Monteverdi Choir directed by the young John Eliot Gardiner (L’Oiseau-lyre SOL 305). If this made it to CDs, I missed it. A splendid 1996 collection featuring Françoise Pollet, Anne Sofie von Otter, John Aler, and Thomas Allen, accompanied by Cord Garben and a number of assisting choristers and instrumentalists (horn, harp, guitar, cello, castanets), included 20 more numbers in addition to Irlande—unknown or occasionally heard—to afford the most searching take on the young, intimate Berlioz on discs (Deutsche Grammophon 435 860). And if you missed it, that eminently desirable but now available only as part of a 10-CD catchall, “The Berlioz Experience” (Deutsche Grammophon 000 120 502), though well worth tracking down in its original two-disc format.
