Originally favorably reviewed by William Youngren in Fanfare 13:4, this dates back to 1989. In their original state, these five trio sonatas for flute, violin, and continuo are among C. P. E. Bach’s earliest works, having originally been composed while he was still living at home in Leipzig. In 1747, after Bach entered the service of Frederick the Great, he revised them, although the degree to which he did so is not known. As Peter Holman writes in a scholarly note, the Trio in D Minor, Wq.145, might provide a small clue, since its second and third movements bear a relationship to a decidedly more old-fashioned work at one time attributed to Emanuel’s father as BWV 1036.
