Based on Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes, Charly tells the tale of a man with learning difficulties who undergoes experimental surgery that results in him acquiring the intellect of a genius. As he achieves his goal of getter smarter and winning the love of his teacher (Claire Bloom), he also starts to see the world as it really is and becomes increasing disillusioned. The film is an existential parable that questions the extent to which education and intelligence define us as people, and director Ralph Nelson does a terrific job of balancing an extremely moving, romantic melodrama with a bleak, damning social critique.
