Nina, an end-of-teens orphan with mental problems, starts a new job as a park cleaner when she meets Toni. They fall in love, but soon Toni starts betraying Nina. In the meantime, Francoise is picked up at the psychiatric department of a Berlin hospital by her husband, Pierre. After meeting Nina, Francoise believes that she has found her long-lost daughter Marie, but neither Toni nor Pierre believe her. Nina is unsure about what to think...

FranÃ§oise keeps going back to Berlin. Each time, she hopes to somehow find her daughter who was stolen there years ago. Her compassionate husband Pierre has once again come to patiently stand by her. Nina is a vulnerable girl, alone in the world except for the social workers at the home for problem teenagers. She finds an ally in reckless Toni, a tough young woman who grabs what she wants to survive. Together they experience a fleeting moment of intimacy, an instant ofhappiness. During her desperate search across the city, FranÃ§oise comes across Nina. The resemblance is uncanny. She has the same scar on her ankle ...

Director Christian Petzold draws his characters in a few, intensive scenes. He approaches them gently, aware of their vulnerability and careful not to expose it. The film composes a mosaic of three women; their inapproachability, their transitoriness, their longings, which turn into sudden moments of great intimacy.

Fantasmas
FranÃ§oise siente cada vez mÃ¡s la necesidad de instalarse en BerlÃn, con la vana esperanza de encontrar a su hija, que fue raptada aÃ±os atrÃ¡s en esta ciudad. Pierre, su marido, intenta por todos los medios convencerla de que debe mirar hacia delante y enterrar el pasado. Mientras tanto, la joven y vulnerable Nina vive en un hogar para adolescentes problemÃ¡ticos. Trabaja limpiando un parque en el que conoce a Toni, una ladrona inquieta y con mucha personalidad, quien vive el momento sin pensar en nada mÃ¡s. Juntas experimentan momentos fugaces de intimidad y algÃºn que otro instante de felicidad. Caminando por la ciudad, FranÃ§oise se topa con las dos chicas y cree ver en Nina a la hija que perdiÃ³ y por otro lado Nina no desea nada mÃ¡s en el mundo que encontrar a esa madre que nunca tuvo... Fantasmas del pasado, en el caso, de FranÃ§oise, anclada en el dÃa que perdiÃ³ a su hija. Fantasmas del presente para Pierre, que sufre por la obsesiÃ³n de su mujer. Y fantasmas del futuro para Nina y Toni, ante las que se presenta un porvenir incierto y dudoso, cargado de malos augurios.
