Complete Me marks the long-awaited long-playing debut from Frankmusik, aka Vincent Frank--a former BMX rider and student at the London School Of Fashion who packed in both to become a do-it-yourself pop star. Accordingly, this is a pop music several steps away from the current stage school/talent show consensus--still invested with big choruses and billowing synthesisers, but delivered with an oddball charisma and quirky intelligence. Described by Frank as "a break-up record written about one girl", Complete Me channels desire, loneliness and melancholy through a kaleidoscope of styles, from pristine pop--see early breakout track "Confusion Girl", here polished into a grand, strings-laden production redolent of Mika or the Pet Shop Boys--to glitched-up synth-pop ("Done Done", "3 Little Words") and mischievous mash-up ("When You’re Around", which pilfers the harpsichord line from The Stranglers’ "Golden Brown" and chops it up into stuttering new melodies). The climax, or at least a sense of closure, comes with "Vacant Heart"--an epic heartbreak number that blows up the emotions of a collapsing relationship into epic widescreen. -- Louis Pattison
