Austrian pianist Friedrich Gulda was a contender, an enfant terrible, an eccentric - but first and foremost, a highly gifted artist whose musical heart was open to music from all over the world. Gulda's name was not only associated with an exceptionally high standing as an interpreter of Viennese Classicism, the pianist from Vienna also caused a sensation as a jazzmusician - and made a name for himself with his own compositions. This outstanding pianist particularly set standards with his brilliant interpretations of Beethovenand Mozart, which were devoted entirely to dassicism: brilliant, technically perfect and always striving to make the structural context dear, Friedrich Gulda went on to gain the highest of honours. With Beethoven he shared an intellect fundamentally willing to challenge contradictions - and an unwillingness to accept limitations. He was awarded important prizes for his artistic understanding and presentation of "one of the greatest revolutionaries in the history of music" (Gulda) - in 1968 he received the "Deutsche Schallplattenpreis" for his complete recording of Beethoven's sonatas and the Vienna Musikakademie awarded him the Beethoven Ring in the following year. Gulda won his first contest at the age of sixteen and made a fantastic debut at the Carnegie Hall in New York in 1950; his liaison with jazz had already begun. Gulda could afford to blatantly ignore the restraints that the conservative classic scene tried to impose on him; despite all the irritations and provocations caused by his conduct in the music world, his brilliant piano playing enjoyed the greatest respect and he was considered one of the truly great pianists of the 20th century.
