Gulda already presented himself as an incredibly mature and talented performer of the works of Mozart, Debussy, Chopin, Bach and Prokofiev on the early recordings made between 1947 and 1949 -he already seems to have arrived: "The feeling of being a c1assical pianist was completely domineering and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I enjoyed being successful with this music, wh ich I loved and admired enormously, to delight and enchant everyone." However, Gulda soon feit restricted by the rigid structures of the classical music business and giving concerts seemed to him to be " hollow, implausible, false" -and he took the liberty of pursuing his own vision of life as a musician: "My musical upbringing was based on the great classicists, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert. I was a model student (...) blah, blah, blah. My encounter with jazz occured in the middle of this period of official recognition for my hitherto perfect career, summa cum laude. Although the music was unfamiliar to me it was still like a liberation." Friedr ich Gulda considered Duke Ellington to be the greatest composer of the 20th century and also considered jazz to be the most important creative achievement of this period. He started broadening his musical horizons, learned to play saxophone and drums and started emulating Miles Davis. In a 1989 interview given in the "Zeit", Gulda said: " I entered the jazz club and found my musical fortune there . Jazz society was still reasonably intact with a certain solidarity, camaraderie, warmth, love -all the things that I missed in the cold academic world . That was my salvation ." In 1956 the world famous performer of Viennese Classicism ventured on to the stage of the New York jazz club "Birdland ": "That really was a test of courage. I passed the test and l'rn quite proud of the fact." He deepened his knowledge of the newly-discovered genre and started living a double life: "...thirty-two Beethoven sonatas at eight recitals (...) and six times saxophone in the same week." Gulda formed the Euro Jazz Orchestra in 1960 and thought nothing of mixing jazz with Mozart. He also initiated world music festivals in Ossiach, Viktring and Salzburg and organised the free music festivals at Moosbach Castle in Lungau .
