This book is intended for those graduate and upper-level undergraduate students in technical fields who wish to know something about how sound propagates in the ocean. It is also useful for the practicing engineer and scientist. It is based on the contents of a graduate course taught several years in the Department of Oceanography of Texas A & M University and a short course held there two summers. The courses were developed under the auspices of the Sea Grant Program of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, United States Department of Commerce. Consistent with the philosophy of the Sea Grant Program, the courses emphasized civilian applications and environmental factors. The book was origmally published as a Texas A & M University Sea Grant Program report which has been used in several university courses in both the United States and abroad.
