George Roy Hill's adaptation of Kurt Vonnegut's whimsical antiwar black comedy--an immensely popular novel at the time of the film's release because of its implicit condemnation of the war in Vietnam--stars Michael Sacks as the placid Billy Pilgrim. He's become quot;unstuck in time,quot; as the author describes him, or more prosaically, he's had a nervous breakdown as a result of a recurrence of the trauma of witnessing the horrific Allied firebombing of Dresden in 1945.
The desultory narrative has Billy jumping from his war experience to his future on the planet Tralfamadore with the buxom Montana Wildhack (Valerie Perrine), then to an episode of shock therapy, then to an episode in his childhood, and then to his life as a relatively unhappy suburban optometrist. Throughout, the naive Billy remains a curious mixture of kindness and detachment, the best combination of qualities one could have, the author seems to imply, for surviving in a world of meaningless suffering.





Although quot;Slaughterhouse-Fivequot; is composed of strangely non-chronological vignettes, each piece of the puzzle works both independently of each other and as a whole. Michael Sacks is our hero Billy Pilgrim, who for reasons that are never explained, travels back and forth through time. Not only does the narrative bounce all over the place but the tone of the film is also in a perpetual state of change. Sometimes it is a very funny social satire. Other times it is a bleak human drama, and yet it is always very poetic and engaging. Episodes of Pilgrim's life suggest that human life is prearranged by a greater power, so the quasi-religious theme proposes a scary possibility. Sacks is wonderful (why did he disappear?). Valerie Perrine looks very eatable as a voluptuous actress. The gorgeous cinematography is by Miroslav Ondrícek. Henry Bumstead's production design is fabulous. But the true hero of the piece is Dede Allen's judicious editing. If one project needed a cutter of the caliber of Allen, was this one. Albert Whitlock's relatively restrained matte work is stunning. Despite its downbeat central idea, George Roy Hill keeps the movie playful and vigorous. It's a great movie. (IMDB comment)

Dans les années 60, Billy est devenu un père de famille respectable. Oui mais voilà, il est détaché du temps. Au gré de ses écritures et de ses rêves, il est promené en divers endroits et en différentes époques. Des retours à la guerre, bien sûr, mais également des excursions sur la mystérieuse planète Tralfamadore, où, prisonnier d’une bulle de verre meublée douillettement, il est le sujet des expériences pratiquées par des entités qu’il ne peut pas voir.
