The Gothaer Waggonfabrik AG, founded as a manufacturer of rolling stock in July 1898, began building aircraft in 1912, starting with a version of the ubiquitous Etrich Taube. Rugged and well-built, the Taubes were produced in fairly large series for the German air service and the Herzog Carl Eduard flying school at Gotha. A few saw combat service in the early days of the war. A variety of biplanes followed in late 1913, some of which were used as trainers and in Turkey as observation machines. The Czech Ingenieur Karl Rosner designed the first Gotha floatplane (WD 1) that was evaluated at Warnemiinde in February 1914. For the remainder of the war, the Gotha floatplanes and twin-engined torpedo aeroplanes were designed by seaplane specialist Rosner. In March 1915, Gotha signed a licence agreement to manufacture the Friedel-Ursinus Kampfflugzeug (battle plane) under the designation Gotha G.I of which 18 were built.
