Hindemith's concerto is, in my opinion, one of the composer's finest works. It is written in the standard three movements, each of which lasts around ten minutes. The first is a tense yet lyrical, moderately fast sonata form movement with, its atmosphere darkened by ominous rhythms that obstinately remain near the surface throughout. The rather dark mood continues in the lyrical slow movement, and the finale, though virtuosic, is not untroubled. Many critics have pointed to Hindemith's exile from then-Nazi Germany and the impending world war as a reason for the pensive tone of this work; I would not argue with this view, but the dark atmosphere of the music gives this work a profundity of expression not always present in this always technically adept composer's oeuvre.
