"I don't mention the inner 4 movements which are as superbly played and sung as in any great recordings by other conductors like Horenstein, Bertini, Abbado, Bernstein, Haitink, Kubelik to name a few. Problematic is the two outer movements where most of them fail to live up to the greatness of the music, and in which James Levine surpasses others. In the first movement he manages to create a sort of primeval force that is terrifyingly overwhelmming and that makes Horenstein and Bernstein's (DG&Sony) account sound tame in comparison. The broardly paced last movement is played much slower but the music never loses intensity and inner drive. Levine achieves an incredible level of opulence and sublimity of the orchestra sounds. The three climaxes are massive and the final apotheosis has the real sense of finality and impact this great movement deserves, matching Mahler's 2nd and 8th's in scale and power - that is second only to Svetlanov's crazy out of proportion version (well worth listening!). RCA's stereo recording technology in 70s is of course second to none, amazingly expanssive and sumptuous.
