      John Högman was born in Stockholm in 1953. In 1961 he moved to Uppsala,
      which has been his home since then and the base for all kinds of
      excursions into the various adventures of life. This was where John soon
      found musicians with common interests, and his energy, restlessness,
      curiosity, and joy in performance generated the contacts he needed. One of
      the first was Ulf Johansson, who lived in a house up the street and turned
      out to be a first-rate pop drummer. They formed a garage combo and things
      developed from there. On this disc Ulf and John blend their trombone and
      sax in I Can't Believe that You're in Love with Me and Ulf plays solo
      trombone in Richie Kamuka's arrangement of a Lester Young solo (in You're
      Driving Me Crazy) entitled Prez-ence. The young John Högman discovered
      jazz when his uncle gave him a record by clarinettist Edmond Hall. He
      retained his interest in jazz despite strong signals from pop and the
      seventies, progressive music and the yuppie era. John and Thomas Amesen
      went to high school together in the early seventies, and they have played
      together since then. Thomas can be heard in Anders PÃ¥se (Anders' Bag)
      -- the style of which John feels suits a certain young Swedish pianist,
      Anders Widmark -- and Film Noir. The latter is purely a synthesizer
      sampler composed by John, featuring sax and guitar recorded on top of each
      other. In A Sentimental, Gentle Man Thomas plays acoustic guitar. John
      met Knud Jörgensen at the beginning of the eighties. They took to each
      other with their shared appreciation of swing, their repertoire, and their
      humor. Knud's self-swing, a masterly, gentle treatment of melody, and
      his sharp, truthful lines, inspired John to expand his experimentation and
      develop greater self-confidence. Knud passed away only a couple of weeks
      after this recording was made. He leaves behind him the warmth of an
      honest musician -- perhaps one of the last jazz titans of his era. Bengt
      Hansson and Knud played together a lot, and Bengt's bass speaks the same
      language as Knud's piano: accuracy and warm musicianship. Johan Dielemans
      plays in the same division. There is plenty of room for his receptiveness
      here, not least together with Monica Zetterlund. John met Johan in Gugge
      Hedrenius' Big Blues Band in the eighties. Their routine, drive, and
      emphasis on the drums gave him an extra touch of inspiration. Most of the
      tunes on this record were written by John. Several of them are fairly new,
      produced by sampling on the synthesizers that were made possible through a
      gift from some friends of a four-track tape recorder a few years ago.
      Being able to plip and plop his own melodies and fantasies was a
      revolutionary step. But there was never any question of abandoning live
      performance -- nor is there any reason to. The title tune, Good Night
      Sister, was written at the end of the seventies and is dedicated to his
      sister Christina. It was often played with Peter Gullin's quintet and was
      also recorded with that group. Theodore is homage to saxophonist Walter
      Theodore Sonny Rollins. Novembersöndag (November Sunday) features
      the combination of live sax, Nils-Erik Sparf on violin, synthesizer and
      sampler. Hiccup is exactly what it sounds like. Gone with the Wind and
      Look for the Silver Lining are old favorites. No Dates is not always
      true, but can bring about a melancholy feeling some days. A Sentimental,
      Gentle Man is dedicated to Knud Jörgensen with love and gratitude. Ladies
