During the Renaissance, no one went to a concert and listened to a performance of a mass; even in church, the parts of the mass were broken up with other music and liturgical business. That's the rationale for interspersing Josquin Desprez's exquisite Missa de Beata Virgine--the most popular of his masses during the 16th century--with thematically relative music from Desprez's contemporary, Jean Mouton. Although stylistically different, the music of these two composers proves highly complementary in this context--and we get the added benefit of hearing the rarely performed Mouton pieces, which hold up surprisingly well next to the work of the greatest composer of the high Renaissance. The Theatre of Voices, configured with seven women and eight men for this music, delivers polished, refined performances, with distinct inner voices and clean, clear articulation. --David Vernier
