My Mother's Smile, directed by Marco Bellochio (Fists in the Pocket) who is known for challenging Catholism’s stronghold in Italian culture, tells the story of the making of a modern-day saint. Painter Ernesto Picciafuocco's (Sergio Castellitto) mother is about to be canonized, after papal hearings determine whether or not she forgave her other son, Egidio, while he was murdering her. Following the crime, family friend Fillipo Argenti is miraculously healed while thinking of her, solidifying her nomination. Ernesto, an atheist, considers supporting this falsity for the wellbeing and wealth of the family, and for his son, Leonardo, who has growing interest in Catholicism. Leonardo's mother, Irene (Jacqueline Lustig), separated from Ernesto, also urges him to comply with the Cardinal's process. Ernesto, torn between establishing the truth and satisfying his family, embarks on an arduous journey of self-investigation, reinforcing his beliefs that morality is based in honesty rather than on standards dictated by organized religion. Beautifully composed, and well written, My Mother's Smile offers a sophisticated view of sainthood, one acknowledging both its spiritual and political aspects. Ernesto's liberal-minded, philosophical approach to the topic makes heavy religion more palatable while emphasizing the Vatican's cultural influence on Rome. Il pittore Ernesto Picciafuoco, convinto ateo, scopre che da anni la sua famiglia ha avviato un processo per la beatificazione di sua madre, uccisa dal di lui fratello, afflitto da turbe mentali. La sua coerenza morale lo porterà, a scapito dei vantaggi sociali che una madre santa potrebbe portare a lui, a sua moglie e, soprattutto, a suo figlio, a non partecipare all'udienza papale nella quale la sua testimonianza potrebbe dare il contributo definitivo. Bellocchio, in un film profondamente etico, sfoga tutta la sua rabbia contro questi tempi di trasformismo, tempi in cui se non sei protetto dalla massoneria, dalla mafia, dalla politica, dalla televisione o dalla Chiesa non sei nessuno, e si pone, nei confronti della religione, dal punto di vista più laico e razionale. Quand le cinéma allie la réflexion, les questionnements actuels (la religion, la politique et le pouvoir, la création artistique, le courage, l'éthique personnelle et individuelle, le poids de la famille comme lieu du conformisme, l'amour comme véritable salut) à une écriture cinématographique subtile, vivante, précise et sensuelle, avec de très bons acteurs italiens (Sergio Castellito - grandissime dans sa finesse de comédien), cela donne un TRES GRAND FILM. Le meilleur film italien depuis longtemps, qui peut être vu de nombreuses fois et continue à questionner, obséder, après l'avoir vu. Marco Bellochio ne démontre rien, n'impose rien : il suggère, laisse quelques zones d'ombre, de mystère dans la narration, ne joue sur aucuns clichés, surprend (cela frise même le polar métaphysique), nous permet de nous identifier totalement au désarroi, au questionnement existentiel, au combat contre l'hypocrisie, à la colère, à l'ironie du personnage principal, et tout ceci dans un film limpide et plein de grâce. Le Sourire de ma mère (L'ora di religione) est un film dans lequel l'alchimie parfaite des images, de la musique et du jeu des acteurs en font un véritable chef-d'œuvre contemporain. Pas moins !
