Willie is a German cabaret singer working in Zurich. She is in love with Robert, a Jewish anti-Nazi activist and composer. When Willie's version of Robert's song Lili Marleen becomes a hit with the German troops, she becomes synonymous with the song, with the Third Reich and the war effort, feted as a national icon and celebrated even by the Führer himself. Enraged that his son's work has been co-opted by anti-Semites, Robert's father plays a cruel trick on the couple, forcing them apart. But the two cannot forget one another, and they each determine to risk everything for the one they love.

Lili Marleen es la historia de una canción que, durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, llegó a convertirse en todo un himno, primero del nazismo y posteriormente extendido hasta el bando aliado. En 1936, Norbert Schultze, un pianista de cabaret, le puso música a la letra que había compuesto años atrás un soldado alemán, y tres años más tarde la grababa en disco una bella pero mediocre cantante llamada Lale Andersen. El resultado fue el éxito y una popularidad sin límite para Lale, que fue entonces monopolizada por los servicios de propaganda del III Reich.
