Rich, upper-middle-class, Raffaella (Mariangela Melato), a loud-mouthed and opinionated Social Democrat from Milan, and the pampered jet-set clique she hangs out with are on a yachting holiday in the Mediterranean. They are served by a crew of poor working-class, dark skinned southerners, one of whom, Gennarino (Giancarlo Giannini), a card carrying communist, cannot abide her whiny bitchiness. As luck would have it, they end up marooned on a deserted island.

What begins as an almost farcical contrast between the working class sailor and the rich bitch on her yacht evolves into an engrossing tale of the need for love and companionship that completely changes the power relationships between the characters. What could have been a dreamy fantasy is repeatedly brought back to earth by details of real human psychology: revenge, compassion, hope and betrayal. I've seen this film at least half a dozen times and it always leaves me thinking and wondering. The cinematography is ethereal and the characters are painfully believeable.

Protagonizada por Mariangella Melato y Giancarlo Gianinni, cuenta la historia de una rica mujer quien viaja con su marido y amigos en un yate por el Mediterráneo, es ahí donde conoce al personaje de Gianinni, quien es un simple marinero y quien será el antagonista de la rica y caprichosa Rafaella...luego de un viaje en bote ambos terminan varados en una isla desierta y es ahí en donde Rafaella sufre...es Gennarino ahora quien está al mando y ella deberá acostumbrarse a las nuevas reglas.
