Lone Star: Amazing debut album. Fantastic keyboards. A great singer Kenny Driscoll ( a great guy too) steeped in the Paul Rodgers vocal tradition. Led Zep meets Queen is the best musical comparative I can give a good mix of hard rock/progressive keyboards giving a pomp rock feel. Just wonderful one of the best debut albums ever. From a complete re-invention of the Beatles song (She Said) where Kenny Driscoll's voice just touches the heart and emotes, the band whirl up a storm, the harmony vocals are breathtaking... I can go on and on.. through "Lonely Soldier" a plaintive vocal yet bombastic (Queen is the obvious comparator), the straight out heavy rock of "Flying in the Reel" enriched by wonderful harmonies what was side 1 of the release just is as good as it gets.. blew me away! What was side 2 of the release.. tracks 4-7 don't quite maintain this standard , I don't think anything could, but still are fine crafted pieces of heavy rock with great vocals, keyboards, guitars and harmonies. Fantastic production. Firing on All Six: Lone Star had a difficult task. Their first album was immense yet they didn't break through to superstar status. They have a new singer John Sloman and when this was released I thought how can this band get better? The answer is they do.. well for one track! "The Bells of Berlin" is a staggering epic with amazing lyrics, Rick Worsnop gets even better as a keyboard player and drives the song. The production is spot on.... and then we get to track 2 of Firing... "the ballad of crafty jack" some ugly time changes, pretty crass lyrics, and John Sloman's voice screams 'Robert Plant in disguise!'. Sadly the rest of the album suffers the same malaise, some comparatively ordinary songs (note the only excellent song was written by the first album's line up!) with clumsy jazz inflected time changes lifted only by the band's musicianship eg "Rivers Overflowing", an ordinary ballad "Seasons in your eyes" winding up with the weakest track the band ever did "from all of us to all of you" , gratuitous and not very musical.. somewhere between a Thin Lizzy and Led Zeppelin reject song.
