Because of an embargo imposed by the U.S. government, very little of the Cuban-rooted music enjoyed by predominantly Latino audienes in the U.S. is actually recorded in Cuba. Most of the salsa hits heard in the U.S. are recorded in New York, San Juan or Miami. It isn't that there's ever been a shortage of high-quality salsa artists in Cuba, where such styles as son,... More mambo and cha-cha were born; it's that their albums don't make it to American shores. Occasionally referred to as the Beatles of Cuba, Los Van Van have exerted a profound pop music influence on the island. He has a no-pretensions, gutsy trombone-plus-charanga sound. Hands down, Cuba's most successful salsa band of the 1980s and '90s has been Los Van Van. A compilation (1984-1990) boasting some of Van Van's strongest material, Dancing Wet is essential listening for salseros. "Yo No Me Explico Lo Que Tiene," "Bailando Mojao," "Aqui El Que Baila Gana" and other gems remind us that were it not for the embargo, this band would be as popular in the U.S. as El Gran Combo or El Conjunto Classico.
