Upon the death of seventy-year-old Henry Van Cleve, a member of New York's social elite, he resigns himself to being sent to Hell and goes there directly. When he arrives, however, he is greeted by His Excellency, a well-dressed and gentlemanly Satan who demands to know what crimes Henry has committed that would justify his internment in Hell. Replying that the best way to relate the story of his life is to describe the women in it...but mainly concentrating on his happy but sometimes difficult great love Martha.

Ernst Lubitschâ€™s "Heaven Can Wait", nominated for Academy Awards for best cinematography, best picture and best director, is an enduring classic and typical of the "Lubitsch Touch": it's a perfect blend of sophistication, romance, wit and bittersweet sentiment. This comedy and romantic tale was Lubitsch's first movie in Technicolor. Samson Raphaelson's screenplay was based on "Birthday", a play by LÃ¡szlÃ³ BÃºs Fekete. The score writer Alfred Newman was Randy Newman's uncle!
Lubitsch's 1943 masterpiece should not be confused with Warren Beatty's 1978 movie "Heaven Can Wait", which is a remake of the 1941 film "Here Comes Mr. Jordan".

Eines Tages ist auch fÃ¼r Henry Van Cleve die Lebensuhr abgelaufen und er steht vor "Seiner Excellenz", dem Teufel, weil er sich nur fÃ¼r die HÃ¶lle fÃ¼r wÃ¼rdig hÃ¤lt. Dies will allerdings der Teufel nicht so leicht glauben und lÃ¤sst sich erst mal erzÃ¤hlen, worin denn auf Erden Henrys Verfehlungen bestanden haben. Und so beginnt Henry sein "diffuses" Leben vor dem Teufel auszubreiten, das von vielen Frauengestalten, aber besonders von seiner groÃŸen Liebe Martha geprÃ¤gt war...

â€žEin himmlischer SÃ¼nderâ€, eine Mischung aus KomÃ¶die, Drama und Liebesfilm, war der erste Farbfilm von Regisseur Ernst Lubitsch und zugleich einer seiner letzten. Er wurde ein groÃŸer Erfolg und in den Kategorien fÃ¼r die beste Kamera, die beste Regie und den besten Film fÃ¼r den Oscar nominiert. Lubitsch verstand es meisterhaft, sein Publikum zu verfÃ¼hren, ihm zugleich aber den Spiegel des Voyeurs vorzuhalten. Diese Kunst der Inszenierung ging als sogenannter â€žLubitsch-Touchâ€ in die Filmgeschichte ein. â€œEin himmlischer SÃ¼nderâ€ ist eine Persiflage auf das Leben und die Moral einer bÃ¼rgerlichen Gesellschaft um die Jahrhundertwende. Unterschwellig spielte Lubitsch jedoch auf die aktuellen Moralvorstellungen der 40er Jahre an.
Lubitschs poetisches KinomÃ¤rchen und ironische GesellschaftskomÃ¶die zugleich basiert auf dem TheaterstÃ¼ck "Geburtstag. Ein Lebensbild in 6 Kapiteln" von LÃ¡szlÃ³ BÃºs Fekete. Alfred Newman, der Komponist des Soundtracks, war ein Onkel von dem Liedermacher und ebenfalls Filmmusik-Komponisten Randy Newman.
