"Specialist violin-record collectors know that this Brahms Concerto from 1927 is not the strongest of the three concertos Kreisler recorded for HMV in Berlin with Leo Blech (the Mendelssohn and Beethoven, from 1926, are in Naxos's first Kreisler Concerto CD), but that it is superior in violin-playing, intonation, and interpretive power to the remake from the 1930s. They know that the Schumann was the original filler for the 78s of the Brahms Concerto. They know that this 1924 recording of the Mozart (also redone by Kreisler in the 1930s) suffers from the customary ills of an acoustically recorded (tuba-reinforced) orchestra, although Kreisler's rich tone comes through clearly. And they know this probably represented the acoustic process at its most sophisticated. With patience it can still be listened to with genuine musical pleasure, especially for Kreisler's magnificent renderings of his own cadenzas and for Kreisler's aristocratic ease and good taste. "My duties can ...be filled by reporting that these Mark Obert-Thorn transfers have excellent side joins with nicely matched pitch, and the most obvious surface noise is dealt with without going to technological extremes and without overfiltering. The notes are by the expertly reliable Tully Potter, and Naxos provides recording dates, matrix numbers, and other important details, so this is comparable to the best of the specialist reissue labels. And the price, of course, is extraordinarily low, challenging the advantages of that Music & Arts midprice reissue.
