Until recently, Mal Waldron was a name that I was vaguely familiar with, just because I had come across it with some frequency. But I didn't know which part of the wide spectrum of jazz musicians that name belonged to. This situation changed when I did some research for my Jim Pepper post. Not only did I find out that Jim Pepper and Mal Waldron had collaborated on a number of records, I also discovered a vast discography spanning several decades. I selected You And The Night And The Music because of the high-calibre line-up. Bassist Reggie Workman and drummer Ed Blackwell give this re-lecture of Jazz standards that extra touch of quality and inspiration.
