Cigale, Divertissement-Ballet in two acts
La Fontaine's fable, 'La Cigale et la Fourmi' ('The Cicada and the Ant'), contrasts an industrious ant, who lays in provisions against the coming of winter, with a carefree cicada, who spends her time singing. With the change of season the ant survives whereas the cicada perishes.
When Henri Cain and Massenet turned this fable into a ballet, with typicallv sardonic French wit they inverted it. For them the ant is grotesque and selfish, whereas the cicada, generous and uncalculating, is destroyed by a world which takes no account of merit.

Cigale was first performed at a matinee benefit performance for the 'petit personnel' — the minor employees — of the Opéra-Comique. Cigale was danced by a very promising young ballerina of the day, Jeanne Chasles, and Madame Fourmi was made suitably grotesque by being mimed by a man, M. Mesmaecker. The choreography was by the celebrated Madame Mariquita, and the conductor was Eugène Picheran. Given as the last item on a long programme, it did not begin till almost 6 p.m., when a large part of the audience had already gone home. Cigale received only four further performances, and has never, as far as is known, been produced elsewhere.
This scant stage-history is an ironic commentary on the prodigality of the Parisian musical scene at the beginning of this centurv. So many operas and ballets were being written that a miniature work like this, however exquisite its craftsmanship, was simply lost in the crush. It is to be hoped that the release of this recording — the first ever of the work — will encourage further stage-performances.

Valse très lente
One of the dances which crossed the Atlantic to Europe around the turn of the centurv was the valse lente, also known in France as the boston or valse anglaise. In 1910 Debussy wrote a bitter-sweet parody entitled La plus que lente (The more-than-slow ). Massenet's Valse très lente has nothing of parody about it. Composed for piano in 1901, this naive, sleepy little waltz was later scored for orchestra. The composer marked it 'très lente et très douce' and added over the melody 'avec charme'.

This recording had been reissued on CD in 2003 by ABC Classics in the "Australian Musical Heritage" series as part of a 4 Cd set "Richard Bonynge, The undiscovered recordings", unfortunately no longer available, as far as I know.
The "Valse très lente" was included by Decca in 2001 in a 10 Cd set "Fête du ballet", still available, but hard to find.
