Composer Peter Maxwell Davies has an elegant analogy to explain the complex convergence of elements that comprises Vesalii icones (1969) -- his part-ballet, part-chamber music, part-performance art piece for solo dancer, cello, and instrumental ensemble. He sees the work's various constituent parts as figures painted on panes of glass which are layered with intervening space, so that the eye can shift focus from one pane to another; at the same time, no matter which layer demands attention at any given time, each layer effects the perception of all the others. In the music of Vesalii icones, these layers can be identified as plainchant, "popular" or jazz music, and that of Davies himself, whose style amalgamates the previous ones
