It's a double disc of a Metallica concert with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, considered one of the best in the country. The concert took place on 21 and 22 April 1999 and in interpreting familiar songs for fans, and two unreleased songs: - Human and No Leaf Clover. Director of the Symphony Orchestra was Michael Kamen , who also lead the orchestra, was who produced music arrangements for orquesta.El title of this concert is a pun. The S of Symphony (Symphony) is a treble clef, which is used at the beginning of the staves in the music scores. And M Metallica logo was taken from the band. S M is also a well known abbreviation of sadism and masochism in English. Also, some fans think that the album title may be a tribute to the song with the same title of the band Thin Lizzy, who is one of the influences of Metallica.
