Saxophonist Miguel Zenon plays contemporary jazz that's highly informed by avant leanings, fusion, and classic hard bop, and AWAKE, the artist's fourth release, is one of his finest efforts. Light and lyrical, Zenon's alto swoops and glides through the structures of these 12 fine compositions (Zenon is at least as notable for his writing as for his playing). Flanked by a taut, sympathetic ensemble, Zenon manages the tricky task of synthesizing styles, bringing together familiar strains of jazz tradition while still remaining fresh, like the music of Branford Marsalis (whose label released AWAKE). This is progressive contemporary jazz that deserves notice.
