CIRCLE IN THE ROUND contains alternate takes and previously unreleased material spanning Miles Davis' acoustic bands of the 1950s through his electric bands of the early '70s.

Miles Davis recorded prolifically for Columbia in his 30 years on the label, and CIRCLE IN THE ROUND contains enough loose tidbits and fascinating leftovers to fill two CDs--with spillover from several of his most fertile periods.

"Side Car" and "Splash" emanate from the MILES IN THE SKY and FILLES DE KILIMANJARO period, as Miles experimented with rock beats and discursive keyboard harmonies. Guitarist George Benson brings a cubist kind of blues sensitivity to the modern harmonies of "Side Car II" and Shorter's moody "Sanctuary," while Joe Beck's droning figures convey the Iberian drama and desolation of the title tune.

Elsewhere there appears this mystical, electro-Carnatic re-upholstery job on David Crosby's "Guinnevere," with its BITCHES BREW sitars, tambouras, berimbaus and moaning keyboards, as trumpet, saxophone and bass clarinet (Bennie Maupin) float overhead. CIRCLE IN THE ROUND begins with a succession of classic '50s-60s bands: the MILESTONES quintet on a driving "Two Bass Hit," the Coltrane-Adderley-Bill Evans-Cobb group (of '58 SESSIONS) on "Love For Sale," and an informal 1961 reunion from the SOMEDAY MY PRINCE WILL COME when Philly Joe sits in on Jimmy Cobb's drums.
