Mostar Sevdah Reunion is a musical ensemble from Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina playing almost exclusively sevdalinka and gypsy music. The band is composed of experienced musicians and often collaborates with renowned musicians in the field of gypsy music: they made two albums with Šaban Bajramović and two albums with Ljiljana Buttler. Ljiljana often tours with the band too.

The band was formed by Dragi Šestić in Mostar in 1998. The band started out as a group of local, talented and experienced musicians -old friends, who made a reunion in summer 1999 for the recording of the first album. Their first CD was released 1999. Since then they became a real world music attraction performing on various world music festivals and receiving a number of music awards.

Her recording with the Mostar Sevdah Reunion band, "The Mother of Gypsy Soul (Snail Records) is one of my CDs of the year and impresses everyone I've played in to .(Simon Broughton ,Songlines, UK, September/October 2002 )

...Ljiljana Buttler's debut CD is delicious: Ljiljana's deep, almost masculine, voice picks out words and tosses them into the air with effortless grace. And the instumental backing by Mostar Sevdah Reunion and legendary trumpet virtuoso Boban Markovic is inspired: the musicians spoon out the notes with a tangilble, almost erotic, delicacy while Ljiljana sails above them, her voice caressing the listener. (Garth Carthwright, FRoots Magazine, UK January/February 2003)

Songlines recommends, ...Something very special indeed. (Kim Burton, Songlines, UK, September/October 2002)

Anyone whoís been paying attention to Songlines will be familiar with Mostar Sevdah Reunion, an extraordinary band born from the destruction of the Bosnian war. Over the past five years theyíve produced a series of recordings highlighting the nostalgic sound of Mostarís characteristic sevdah songs and the voices of veteran singers like Iljaz Delic, Ljiljana Buttler and Saban Bajramovic.
This new recording with Amira Medunjanin, a vocalist from Sarajevo, is something different. For one thing, sheís a new, young singer. Amira (who performed one song on MSRís last CD, A Secret Gate), has a pure, delicate voice which floats seductively above the stripped-down accompaniments. Furthermore, thereís a piano on many of the tracks, deftly played by Kim Burton, which gives the album a more contemporary, nightclub feel.
The opening number, ëIn the Rose Gardení, sets the tone for a series of lyrical songs of love and loss from Bosnia and elsewhere in former Yugoslavia. Beautiful instrumental solos emerge from time to time on accordion, clarinet and guitar; thereís even a slide guitar on ëBy a Stream of Bright Clear Waterí, probably the most gorgeous track. On this number, and another accompanied by piano alone, Amira has the confidence to sing with an unhurried stillness and poise, leaving lots of space around her voice.
My only reservation is that Amiraís voice isnít yet quite characterful enough to sustain a whole album. Thereís a welcome duet with accordionist Mustafa Santic, but it would be great to have the dark, lived-in voice of Ljiljana Buttler for a strongly contrasted couple of tracks. All the same, this is a fabulous record which gets even better with repeated listening.

BBC – REVIEW by Jon Lusk
11 January 2008

After a stellar career in the kafanas (music bars) of former Yugoslavia, Gypsy singer Ljiljana Petrovic fled the Balkan war for exile in Germany in 1990, changing her name to Buttler through marriage and living in obscurity. Then intrepid producer Dragi Sestic 'rediscovered' her, and with virtuoso acoustic group Mostar Sevdah Reunion, they made The Mother Of Gypsy Soul (2003), a beautiful album of classic Bosnian sevdalinka – slow, tragic love songs often dubbed 'Bosnian blues'. The release of this marvellous 2005 follow-up of Roma and Yugoslav standards was delayed by a legal dispute, but happily it finally appeared 'and it's every bit as good as her earlier album. Unfortunately, the band that made it are no more, having split in two as a result of more music business shenanigans, although Sestic continues to do wonders with his Balkan brand.
The overwhelming tone of The Legends Of Life is one of sad resignation over doomed love, as the lyric translations reveal. Buttler's deep, sobbing, androgynous voice is just made for this kind of melancholic wallowing and it’s on the mournful ballads such as Kazi Zasto Me Ostavi and Jos Ne Svice Rujna Zora that she really excels. It's hard to tell her apart from (male) Gypsy legend Saban Bajramovic on the stunning duet Rupini, another undoubted highlight.
The bulk of the songs are traditional, but Buttler's own brooding masterpiece Tesko Je Umreti hangs in the air with a mesmerising power, amplified by sterling instrumental support. The slithering violin of Slobodan Stancic lights up this and several other pieces, as does Mustafa Santic's empathetic accordion and clarinet. A walking bass on Mirisni Cvetak is one example of the subtle jazz influence that colours some arrangements, and the epic traditional song Placem Vec Tri Dana sounds like an inspired Balkan rewrite of Led Zeppelin's blues showstopper, Since I've Been Loving You.
There are a few upbeat dances such as Verka Kaludjerka and Andro Verka and even some laughter to lighten things, but it's the slower numbers that really burn themselves into the memory. Misery has seldom sounded so musical.

To keep the Bosnian Mostar Sevdah Reunion and leader Dragi Šestić personally responsible for revitalizing the traditional Balkan song is maybe a bit to much but their impact is undeniable. Thus, the late singing legend Saban Bajramović was rescued from oblivion and also Ljiljana Buttler amazed in 2002 the western world with "The Mother of Gipsy Soul '. With a voice that had too much heavy tobacco, whiskey and hard life she is suffering the Balkan Blues in an inspiring way. The collaboration with MSR and Šestić was a lucky one so this third album, "Frozen Roses", again is made with them behind the desk and in the studio. On the new album Ljiljana follows the progress MSR itself also goes through. This is in contrast to Saban who, for his death, rigidly maintained to the old traditions. Ljiljana not. Jazz, blues and tango, they almost naturally blend into the traditional Bosnian sevdah music. That it all is not uptempo is understandable. Ljiljana is not one of the youngest and her voice just isn't meant for uptempo songs. Exemplary is the story about the recording of the song 'Sonja' in which the pianist was always playing too fast. Eventually Šestić forced the man to play the track with his left hand in the air while thinking of a prisoner in Siberia. That worked. Unfortunately it takes some patience to get used to the slow pace. At first listening the album may sound a bit monotone. Only after a second spin, the distinctive jazzy arrangements of songs like 'Gjelem Gjelem' and 'Ostala je pesma moja' fall into place. In Bosnia, Ljiljana now has the status of the Ella Fitzgerald of the Balkans. That status she reluctantly accepts, as the bunch of white roses on the cover of her new album.
