Crammed Discs brings us yet another CD in the ‘Gypsy’ genre, this being selected and remixed by Belgian DJ Gaetano Fabri. A resident DJ of Nuits Tsiganes at Divan du Monde, Paris, epicentre of the Gypsy disco movement in Europe, Fabri cultivates what could better be described as electro-manouche rather than mixed Balkan Brass

Fabri’s jazz and techno background filter through in his exploration and remoulding of some familiar tracks, which is done with a total understanding of where this urban Gypsy disco movement is heading.

Included in this collection are a couple of tracks found on the Electric Gypsyland volumes, the brilliant remix of Taraf de Haidouks’ ‘Go East’ and Koçani Orkestar’s ‘Siki Siki Baba’ which are both now classics. The newer remixes which make up the majority of the album have a distinct French (or is it Belgian) feel.

‘No Comment’ from Beltuner, a Paris-based accordion-filled Gypsy jazz band, is mixed up to create a cute track suitable for the dancefloor. Bravely, the raw vocals of ‘Romashka’ are melded into a unique electronic interpretation of Gypsy folk. But it works. Balkan Beat Box, Fanfare Ciocarlia, and Kocani Orkestar all feature here but the best tracks are remixes of Kal’s ‘Dvojka’ and ‘Mozzarella’, and Dj Click’s ‘Of of of’ which all promise frantic club moments.

The only criticism I would have is that the tracks previously released on Electric Gypsyland, as good as they are, don’t fit with the new work. They just sound like they are coming from a very different place. I am sure the Gypsy-club dancefloors of Europe will fill with these tracks and if you are a fan of Gypsy and manouche and want to hear a charming and very modern interpretation of that music you will enjoy this album.
