The purpose of this book is to provide a guide to the literature of the Old Testament as a resource for the ministry of the Christian church. The discussion is directed primarily to the pastor engaged in the serious study of Scripture. However, because the task of the preaching ministry is closely akin to that of the teaching ministry, I have sought to address the scholar of the church along with the pastor. I see no qualitative difference in their both sharing in the Christian ministry as a learned profession. Particularly at a time in which the image of the minister has been severely eroded by much confusion, it seems important to seek to recover the role of the pastor as both the spiritual and the intellectual leader of the flock.
