Film soundtracks rarely have a life of their own. They’re often a haphazard mixture of pop songs used to spruce up the action or else a lot of meandering incidental music that has no independent life outside of the movie. The Wicker Man however is a quite different matter. The storyline and acting of this cult classic are so strong that it would be pretty impressive without any type of soundtrack at all, but Paul Giovanni’s unique brand of darkly joyous folk music which fully embraces the pagan fertility themes of Summerisle elevates the film to a whole new level. What’s even more amazing is that the soundtrack would sit quite comfortably alongside such folk touchstones as Fairport Convention’s Liege and Lief and Steeleye Span’s Hark! the Village Wait, which is no mean feat considering that the material was prepared with the strict confines of the film’s plot in mind.
There’s little hint of the drama to come in the gentle “Opening Music”. This ethereal, Scottish tinged tune sets the scene perfectly as Sgt. Howie’s glider drifts slowly towards the picturesque, but strange village of Summerisle. “Corn Rigs” follows soon after; a simple but very strong acoustic track about the innocent onset of new love. The first signs that things are going to get a bit uncomfortable for the devoutly Christian sergeant start with the drunken pub singalong “The Landlord’s Daughter” – a homage to the gorgeous siren Willow who helps to run the tavern with her father. With its blatantly sexual content, brash accordion and non too tuneful singing, this track is of course designed to grate after a while and consequently it seems a good deal longer than its two and a half minute duration!
Thankfully the next three tracks offer a far more graceful celebration of sex and fertility. “Gently Johnny” is a wonderfully tender and enticing work with the carefully regulated raps on the drum forming an important counterpoint to the lovely acoustic tune. The lyrics give us the first real taster as to the strength of pagan fertility beliefs in that the very fast and direct courtship between the man and woman doesn’t come across as the least bit sordid or forced – it’s just the natural way of life among pagan folk. The children are openly taught the sexual expectations of their society from a very young age, as highlighted by the circle-of-life playground chant “Maypole”. A catchy little ditty, this would be just the sort of thing that children would learn by heart, consequently applying its underlying message to their later life. “Fire Leap” is more or less its mature equivalent. Gone is the chirpy childish bounce, here replaced by a darker, heavier chant performed by naked girls dancing around and over a small fire. When Sgt. Howie asks Lord Summerisle why he allows this sort of behaviour, he gets the surprisingly logical reply that it’s far more dangerous to jump over a fire fully clothed!
“The Tinker of Rye” returns to the comical sound of “The Landlord’s Daughter”, but it’s given a slightly classier feel by the piano arrangement and the playful vocals of Lord Summerisle and Miss Rose. The use of the hammer as a phallic symbol is reminiscent of the traditional folk classic “The Blacksmith” and while hardly in the same league, it’s an amusing burst of light-hearted fun. Far more complex is the rich seduction ballad “Willow’s Song”. Like “Gently Johnny” it begins with a regular rap of the drum (and wall), but this time develops into a highly sensual and hypnotic mating dance of haunting power and exceptional beauty. The film visuals help to put the track into its full context, but even as a stand alone piece it’s simply stunning.
The film visuals are far more necessary for much of the incidental music. The May Day celebrations and dramatic closing scenes certainly need to be savoured on the screen and though the music marries the sequences perfectly, it can’t possibly hold the same ominous threat or emotional weight without the plot unfolding alongside it. In some ways this is a compliment since a soundtrack is supposed to support the action rather than upstage it, but as the film’s shocking and iconic finale plays out to the lusty strains of “Sumer is A-Cumen In”, you can’t help but wonder just how highly The Wicker Man would be rated shorn of Paul Giovanni’s wonderfully rich and varied score.
