Rod Steiger plays Pvt. O'Meara, a Confederate soldier who fires what turns out to be the final shot of the Civil War. Unwilling to accept the "death" of his beloved South once the peace treaty is signed at Appomattox, O'Meara heads West. There, after establishing his worthiness through an endurance test known as "the run of the arrow," he joins a Sioux tribe and falls in love with a beautiful maiden named Yellow Moccasin, played by Sarita Montiel. Tension mounts when the U.S. Army, lead by Lt. Driscoll (Ralph Meeker), builds Fort Abraham Lincoln just beyond the edge of a hallowed Sioux hunting ground. When a popular captain (Brian Keith) is killed by an enraged Sioux warrior (H.M. Wynant), Driscoll uses that as an excuse to attack the Indians...





With an ostensibly similar narrative and theme to Lawrence of Arabia, Fuller's film exhibits all the genuine cinematic intelligence and forcefulness that Lean's so sadly lacks. Here Steiger is the 'victim' of a cultural identity crisis, turning his back on America after the Civil War and being accepted into a Sioux tribe, his sojourn equating in many ways with Lawrence's among the Arabs. A 'mere' genre movie, but its subject is the concept, the ideal and the imperfect reality of the United States; political and psychological reconciliation in the face of hate, prejudice and guilt, vigorously expressed. Posiblemente la mejor prueba del talento versátil de Fuller (que, con la excepción notable del crítico Manny Farber, ni siquiera sus defensores reconocieron en su momento, colocándolo en el mejor de los casos en la categoría de “buen salvaje”), El vuelo de la flecha es un western crepuscular, épico sin esfuerzo, romántico cuando quiere, furioso por supuesto. Uno que comienza en el punto decisivo de la mitología americana, con la rendición del General Lee tras la batalla de Appomatox. O’Meara, veterano sureño, se niega a aceptar la deshonra de la derrota y viaja al oeste, donde rehace su vida entre los sioux. Pero el ejército construye un fuerte en las tierras de la tribu y O’Meara debe decidir de qué lado estará cuando se desate la inevitable violencia. (Malba)

Le 9 avril 1865 marque la fin de la guerre de Sécession. Le soldat sudiste O'Meara, refusant la defaite, se refugie chez les Sioux. Il subi le jugement des fleches avant d'etre accepte par les indiens et d'epouser Yellow Mocassin. Mais la paix conclue avec les Blancs est rompue par le meurtre d'un soldat et O'Meara se trouve dechire entre les deux camps.
