Master swindler James Reavis devotes years to forging documents that will give him claim to the entire state of Arizona. He finds a young girl whom he believes is an orphan and hires a governess to educate her in the manner of the Spanish aristocracy. He invents deceased parents for her whose ancestry can be traced to a mythical Spanish nobleman. He then insinuates himself into a Spanish monastery for three years so he can access its biblioteca which carries the records of Spanish land grants. He later joins a gypsy band to have access to the library of a Spanish noblemen where he can alter duplicate documents. When everything is in place, he marries the now-grown young woman and puts in his claim as her husband as the Baron of Arizona.

â€œVincent Price always claimed that his favorite film role was as James Addison Reavis, the anti-hero of The Baron of Arizona. Reavis was a real-life character, a shady sharpster who during the early 19th century forged land grants to make it seem as though the Arizona territory was owned by the high-born Peralta family of Spain. He married one of the surviving Peraltas (here played by Ellen Drew), then claimed all of Arizona for himself, assuming the mantle of benevolent despot. Reavis' ever-increasing megalomania leads inexorably to a "hoist on his own petard" climax. Produced by parsimonious Lippert studios, Baron of Arizona successfully makes a tiny budget go a long way (the studio even managed to secure the services of the highly sought-after cinematographer James Wong Howe). Vincent Price rises to the occasion with one of his finest (and, significantly, least hammy) performances.â€ â€“ All Movie Guide

Parece que la historia fue cierta: un individuo astuto invirtiÃ³ buena parte de su vida en la falsificaciÃ³n de pruebas, documentos y hasta de una persona para tratar de erigirse en barÃ³n del estado de Arizona. Fuller reconstruye cada paso de la elaborada estafa pero no se queda sÃ³lo con esa anÃ©cdota sino que decide enriquecerla con pertinentes conflictos emocionales: el estafador queda, sin darse cuenta, cautivo de la falsa baronesa que Ã©l mismo ha inventado.
