Samuel Fuller’s throat-grabbing exposé on American racism was misunderstood and withheld from release when it was made in the early eighties; today, the notorious film is lauded for its daring metaphor and gripping pulp filmmaking. Kristy McNichol stars as a young actress who adopts a lost German shepherd, only to discover through a series of horrifying incidents that the dog has been trained to attack black people, and Paul Winfield plays the animal trainer who tries to cure him. A snarling, uncompromising vision, White Dog is a tragic portrait of the evil done by that most corruptible of animals: the human being.





Samuel Fuller's "White Dog" is arguably the greatest allegorical film about racism ever made; yet it sadly received a hypocritical treatment upon its release and certain 'important' people who assumed that audiences weren't ready for such a subdued, confronting and challenging film deliberately pushed it into oblivion. Notwithstanding this harsh and unfair treatment, "White Dog" is a remarkably subtle venture into the phenomenon of racism and the film is, ironically enough, intelligent because of its simplicity. Fuller and co-writer Curtis Hanson do not directly attack racism, they just illustrates the senselessness through the persona of one of its living 'instruments'. The dog – as Paul Winfield's character compellingly explains – only sees in terms of black and white and instinctively attacks the color he's learned to hate, but basically he is also just a victim of the depraved phenomenon. Rather than to shove morals down your throat or to point fingers at random people, "White Dog" simply depicts three courageous people attempting to 'cure' one victimized dog of racism but leaves it up to the viewer to make generalizations, if any.

En White Dog una joven adopta a un perro, un pastor de piel blanca, que se muestra muy cariñoso con ella pero que de vez en cuando tiene impulsos violentos; progresiva y trágicamente, la chica descubre que el cánido ha sido entrenado para atacar a la gente de tez negra… Fuller dirigió la película en las postrimerías de su carrera cinematográfica, y aunque en una primera apariencia nos pueda afrentar su textura telefílmica y su tan poco velada filiación ochentera, a poco que escarbemos nos daremos cuenta de la altura cinematográfica de esta película de tan difícil filiación genérica.
Escarbando en el texto, no tardamos en descubrir la piel del lobo, del viejo Fuller, quien viste con su proverbial economía descriptiva esta parábola de tintes sociológicos, esta meditación sobre la genealogía de la lacra social llamada segregación racial, y que va delineando una radiografía hiperbólica cuya única forma es la violencia y único fondo el pesimismo. Atiéndase a la compresión narrativa, a la absoluta ausencia de espacios muertos en el frenético devenir de la historia, magníficamente secuenciada en dos tiempos, el primero de exposición de la materia, y el segundo –el más brillante cinematográficamente hablando-, en el que se plantea la tesis que al final se revelará irresoluble. En su apasionada crítica publicada en la edición de octubre de 2005 de la revista digital “Miradas de Cine”, Emilio Martínez-Borso decía que White Dog es “la película anti-racista más efectiva jamás realizada”

Actrice solitaire, Julie Sawyer percute un splendide chien blanc dans l’obscurité des collines d’Hollywood. Après l’avoir porté chez un vétérinaire, la jeune femme garde l’animal, adorable…du moins aux premiers abords. Une nuit, un cambrioleur agresse Julie à son domicile et le toutou intervient dans la bagarre, défendant vaillamment sa nouvelle maîtresse. Soulagement de courte durée puisque l’animal tue un homme lors d’une escapade en ville et blesse une amie de Julie : les deux victimes étaient des personnes de couleur noire…
