“Franz Schubert (1797 - 1828) was born in Lichtental, Austria. He was a religious man, and he composed church music during his whole life, but it seems that he had a strong feeling against the Catholic church of his time. In the Masses he composed he never set the words "Et in unam sanctam, Catholicism et apostolicam ecclesiam", so that only by special pontifical dispense they are allowed to be used within the liturgy in Austrian and Bavarian churches. In 1815 Schubert attempted a first setting of the Stabat Mater, and restricted himself to the first four verses, but a year later he composed another on a much more grand scale.”
