Picture a square with Clannad, pianist David Lanz, Mannheim Steamroller, and the musicians of Riverdance at its corners. Somewhere within those stylistic borders you will encounter the European duo Secret Garden. The popular twosome--Irish violinist Fionnuala (fi-NOO-la) Sherry and Norwegian pianist/keyboardist Rolf Lovland--have attracted a sizable following with their heart-touching specialty: a wistful, violin-rooted, pop-folk-classical melange that often strikes the ear as a film score in search of some delicate romantic tale. Songs from a Secret Garden is the duo's debut recording from 1995, and it principally offers a series of pensive dialogues between Sherry's stately violin and Lovland's subdued piano, yielding equal measures of sweetness and melancholy. Whistles, pipes, percussion, strings, and ethereal voices serve as embellishments. At times you may sense you're being serenaded by strolling musicians with a heavy sentimental streak; at other times you may feel genuinely moved--perhaps by something as lovely as the reverential \"Sigma\" and its sublime, Gregorian-like choral passages. Only one uptempo tune, \"The Rap,\" surfaces here; a few others would have been welcomed. And yes, this is the disc where you will find \"Heartstrings,\" the composition that once smote Barbra Streisand's heart. She eventually acquired the rights to the piece, inserted lyrics, renamed it \"I've Dreamed of You\" (found on A Love Like Ours), and sang it to James Brolin during the couple's 1998 wedding. --Terry Wood

This is music celebrating the human heart and spirit in all their many moods. With a good mix of lively songs and sweet, slow ones, this CD can make you dance one minute and cry the next. The music was composed by Norwegian Rolf Lovland and is orchestral in nature, featuring Irish violinist Fionnuala Sherry, Lovland on piano, piper and whistler Davy Spillane, oboist Simon Emes, hardanger fiddler Annbjorg Lien and others. Lovland takes his inspiration from a variety of sources--Celtic, Scandinavian, Baroque, classical and his own modern sensibilities, as well as the talents of Sherry and the other musicians. The simple grace of his arrangements and the heartfelt emotion with which they are played make this music very memorable, and very special. When you listen to it, even on the worst of days, it’s nigh impossible to look about and not see beauty all around you. This release is my favorite of Secret Garden’s albums, and I recommend it most highly!

Once In A Red Moon continues Secret Garden’s tradition of straight-from-the-heart performances and accomplished songwriting. The passionate ballad “You Raise Me Up,” with moving lyrics by Brendan Graham, features vocals by Brian Kennedy of “Riverdance” fame and the excitable gospel power of the London Community Gospel Choir, as well as Uillean Pipes master Liam O’Flynn. Other vocal tracks, “The Gates Of Dawn,” and “Greenwaves” feature Scottish singer Karen Matheson, while world renowned cellist Julian Lloyd Webber joins Secret Garden on the haunting track “Duo.” Other highlights include trademark Secret Garden instrumentals such as “The Promise” and “Awakening.” The album also features a once in a lifetime musical experiment involving fans from all corners of the globe. Via their website, the duo asked people to participate in the making of Once In A Red Moon by sending them “a C chord,” recorded on a piano. They received piano chords from all over the world, creating a global energy of sound for the final chord of the emotional closing track "Elegie".

From the rhapsodic opening to the victorious closing hymn, DAWN OF A NEW CENTURY casts a warm and dreamy spell. Norwegian composer Rolf Lovland and Irish violinist Fionnula Sherry created this album to celebrate the new millennium and their hopes for an eternity of love. The songs -- prayers, lullabies, and requiems sung in Norwegian, Irish, and English -- are lush and richly resonant: Violin, harp, traditional Celtic instruments, and orchestra seem to inhabit a magical, visionary realm. The Irish choir Anúna offers moments of pastoral grandeur on "In Our Tears/Dona Nobis Pacem," while Norwegian folk singer Anne Karin Kaasa calls like a siren in "Evensong." Irish dances and a cocky baroque gavotte liven the pace, but DAWN OF A NEW CENTURY is essentially an expansive embrace. The disc closes with the title track, a joyous march into the future that will give you goosebumps. Carol Wright

Unlike the previous reviewer, I was very much aware that this was a compilation album and not the new studio album which is due this fall. I also would have to ask the burning question, how can one lose one's creativity when you release a compilation album? Isn't the point of a compilation album to release previously released materials? With that being said, the only new material on the album is the final track entitled "The Present," which was written by a Korean artist for a movie soundtrack. It is not a bad track, however, to those who have heard their previous works, it is clear that it is not at the same level as their songs that they wrote themselves.

For those that have never heard or bought any of the Secret Garden's previous releases, this is a great way to introduce yourself to a great instrumental band. For those, like myself, who already own all three Secret Garden albums and just has to own everything by this group, the new track will get some play, but I think most will favor the older songs to the new.

This two disc set is a compilation put together by Universal Music Korea. The first disc contains songs from the first four Secret Garden albums, along with three songs arranged for soprano (replacing the violin part), and featuring Korean singer Youngok Shin. The last two tracks, Hymn to Hope and Song From a Secret Garden, feature the soprano singing Korean lyrics. The track Swan is an arrangement of the song Adagio, with the soprano singing English lyrics written by Brendan Graham. Disc two features ten selections drawn from the live concert "A Night With Secret Garden" available on video and DVD. Most of the best tracks from the first four Secret Garden albums are here, and it's nice to have some of the live concert performances available in audio format. The three arrangements with soprano vocals by Youngok Shin are very well done, and she has a great voice!

It's been a long time coming ... Secret Garden is proud to announce the release of the Norwegian Edition of their new CD "Inside I'm Singing" on Monday, the 26th of November . The International release will follow during the first quarter of 2008.

　　"Inside I’m Singing" is a project that started off as an idea for a 10th Anniversary celebration of the duo's inception. Many artists have recorded Secret Garden's music and even turned their instrumental melodies into vocal songs."We wanted to reverse the process – take some of our own favorite melodies – have lyrics written to them - arrange them in our own style – and invite some of the greatest singers to give their voice and performance to our music."

　　The artists performing the songs of Secret Garden on this edition are - Barbra Streisand, Elaine Paige, Brian Kennedy, Niamh Kavanagh, Peter Corry, Tracey Campbell, Tommy Körberg, Peter Jöback, Anne Takle, Espen Grjotheim and Steinar Albrigtsen. "We are very proud to present an amazing circle of artists who have all given our music their voice and heart – who most generously have shared their utmost performance and signed our music with their name".
