In 1994 the duo cut Night Song, their first album together. 'We spent a week in the studio for Night Song,' says Sidsel, 'and we enjoyed it so much and started getting gigs. After the album was released in spring 1995 we started getting gigs abroad, and by that time what started off as a "side project" was a living, working and definitely serious musical entity!' Looking back on that first album, Bugge recalls, 'Our basic idea was to do some personal favourites - in our own way, of course - and some totally improvised pieces.' Among their favourites was an arresting version of 'Lady Is A Tramp,' but totally re re-imagined by the duo, 'Sidsel often comes up with brilliant ideas for arranging,' says Bugge. 'It is important for us to make a song like "Lady Is A Tramp" sound like an "original" song. So Sidsel's idea was for me to play the kalimba [thumb piano] on the song - but first I had to find out how to play it, it wasn't easy!'

This album begins with an a capella rendition of the Aretha Franklin classic 'Chain of Fools' in which Norwegian vocal artist Sidsel Endresen, who has emerged as one of the foremost Nordic voices of the last decade with avant-garde jazz albums on the ECM label such as 'Exile' and 'I Write', shows us that she can do a very passable impression of Annie Lennox when she puts her mind to it. 'Night Song' is, to my knowledge, her first recorded collaboration with jazz pianist and synthesiser artist Bugge Wesseltoft, who has always been at the leading edge of contemporary music, and has recently achieved considerable success with his 'new Conception of Jazz' series. Recorded in 1994 it is a highly individual meeting of two very different but in many ways similar artistes. In addition to 'Chain of Fools' the album also includes a version of the Rodgers & Hart classic 'The Lady is a Tramp' that begins with Ms Endresen singing the well known lyric over a tinkling synthesised glockenspiel and ends with an extended and melancholy piano solo that just drifts on and on and... Couple this with the seven minute tone poem 'Psalm' in which a haunting melodic chant gives way to some distinctly strangled shrieks and groans and you have a strange but surprisingly endearing album that hangs around in your consciousness and pops up again when you least expect it. Not the normal fare, but highly recommended nevertheless.
