The Smoke Fairies are Jessica Davies and Katherine Blamire, whose folk-blues and bluegrass playing seem a world away from their birthplace in Chichester, West Sussex. The girls met at school and started playing music together. After school they spent a year studying in New Orleans. It was there, during their stint playing the city’s bars and cafés, the duo began to cross trad-folk and blues that make up their cool, sultry sound. The girls then travelled around the Southern states for three months and, after graduating from university, spent a year in Vancouver. In 2007, they went on tour with Brian Ferry.
Last summer Smoke Fairies released their first single Living with Ghosts — a song awash with the wistful melancholy that has seen them pull in fans from far and wide.
Their new Frozen Heart EP, packaged as a limited edition 7'' with a free 5-track CD, is to be released on July 13th.
"Frozen Heart" and "Morning Light" came from the session with David Coulter in the producer's chair (David is famed for his work with Tom Waits and Nick Cave). The other three remaining tracks on the CD were recorded and produced with collaborator Leo Abrahams (Brian Eno & David Byrne, David Holmes, Jarvis Cocker).
