Pop with balls. "Rose, My Rocket-Brain!" has Stereolab in top form, bouncing up and down, even as the song shifts from one place to the next. Musically and ideologically, amid contradictions you find similarities, and riff on the irony of it all. You hop from garage pop to moog rock to bubblegum to ELOish prog while being a little everywhere all at once, just swinging from one hook to another. Riles you up. Dance, then think.

Then think while dancing, as it blurs the line between "anthem" and "lecture". It revels in the continuity in the opposing views on Iraq, as the song lambasts both the military occupation and the anti-war movement's lack of focus. Both are self-serving, short-sighted and rife with hypocrisy, and are completely ineffective at creating "positive politics". The song's a call to something much bigger, more transformative. It isn't a how-to guide. It's a protest song that knows its limitations, and knows its power lies in its, um ... power.

Especially post-election, it suggests that the failure to save the Iraqis mirrors the failure to save us from ourselves. It's an energizer, and a provoker. It's just a pop song, yet it's a powder keg. Easily the song of the year.
