Gary Busey's performance in "The Buddy Holly Story" was nothing short of electrifying. His Academy Award nomination for Best Actor (1978) was well deserved. And though he didn't take home the best acting Oscar, his nomination got this film noticed. If you haven't see the film, rent it. You should fast-forward through the story parts and focus on the music. Watch Gary Busey BECOME Buddy Holly. It is eerie. Even more profound is all of the musical performances were filmed live (something that would be unheard of in today's moviemaking, where actors lipsync to a prerecorded track for every take). Remarkably, most of the songs were captured in only one or two takes.

This soundtrack tries to capture the electricity on display and it does an adequate job, but there is no substitute for seeing the film. That's because you really have to see Gary Busey to believe it. Once you've seen the movie, this soundtrack will keep the memories alive. You will return to the CD again and again. There are several songs on this CD not included in the movie, which makes it an even more interesting listening experience. The only bad thing is the paltry running time of 29 minutes. Long out of print on CD and hard to find.
