“ It is a long-standing commonplace that the rich, lyrical sound of the 'cello has an affinity with the human voice. This recording proposes a more unusual and specific connection, for one can hear in the 'cello's soulful song the voice of the cantor in the Jewish religious service. The program features works by some important Jewish composers from the early nineteenth century through the present day, in some of which the suggestion of cantorial chant is made explicit by the use of Hebrew melodies and/or a recitative-like style. Most of the cantor-inspired music here is from the Ashkenazic tradition --- that is, from the Jews of Western and Eastern Europe; there is one example, a prayer by Paul Ben-Haim, of the Sephardic style, which derives from the Jews of Spain. Also included are works by two non-Jewish composers, Max Bruch and Maurice Ravel, who were inspired by melodies of the Jewish service.
- Kevin Bazzanaand Coenraad Bloemendal ”
