The Everly Brothers' Cadence Records sides of the late '50s featured some of the duo's best work. And this expanded and slightly reconfigured 18-song audiophile-quality reissue of their first Cadence best-of compilation shows off just how deep and far-ranging their work was. Shooting to stardom in their wake, the Brothers' many Cadence highlights include "Bye Bye Love," "Wake Up Little Susie," "All I Have to Do Is Dream," "Problems," and "When Will I Be Loved," all of which were on the original LP. Producer Steve Hoffman has added to that 12-song lineup, expanding it to include numbers such as "('Til) I Kissed You" -- as highly regarded today as anything on the original -- as well as other, lesser-known but equally worthy tracks, and he's gone back to the first-generation master tape for each song, creating a CD with killer sound, as well. He's also licensed their first Warner Bros. hit, "Cathy's Clown," which sort of rips the envelope of the original album, but at least that track matches everything that came before it in stylistic terms. One got a heavy dose of Boudleaux and Felice Bryant's incredible songs on the original LP (not to mention the chance to hear of some of the best Nashville players of the day), but on this disc one also gets a fuller picture of the Everlys' own songwriting, which became the equal of their singing. Maybe not as attractive as Rhino's Everly roundups (one features both the Cadence and WB sides), this CD still holds up nicely as a full profile of their earliest, most successful years. [DCC released an expanded edition of the CD.]
