The Boys From Fengkuei (1983) - 102 minutes
Ah-Ching and his friends have just finished school in their island fishing village, and now spend most of their time drinking and fighting. Three of them decide to go to the port city of Kaohsiung to look for work. They find an apartment through relatives, and Ah-Ching is attracted to the girlfriend of a neighbor. There they face the harsh realities of the big city.


A Summer At Grandpa's (1984) - 94 minutes
A young boy and his sister spend a summer at their grandparents' house in the country while their mother recuperates from an illness. They while away the hours climbing trees, swimming in a stream, searching for missing cattle, and coming to uneasy grips with the enigmatic and sometimes threatening realities of adult life.


A Time To Live, A Time To Die (1985) - 137 minutes
Hou Hsiao Hsien directed this semi-autobiographical film, drawing on his childhood experiences when his family relocated to Taiwan from China. Spanning the years 1947-1960, the film follows the maturation of Ah-ha as he and his family cope with the shock of leaving their homeland. Having been only a child during the move, Ah-ha quickly acclimates himself to the new country, often putting him at odds with his more traditional family.


Dust in the Wind (1986) - 109 minutes
A-yuan and A-yun are both from the small mining town of Jiufen. In the city, A-yuan is an apprentice by day and goes to night school, and A-yun works as a helper at a tailor. Everyone thinks they are meant for each other. They fail to see time and fate are beyond their control.
