The New Colony Six were an American rock band of the 1960s, specializing in lyrically romantic pop songs, which mixed a rock beat with carefully crafted harmonies in both the vocal and instrumental sections of their works, coupled with glossy production values in the recording studio.
Formed in 1964 in Chicago, Illinois, they scored a major local hit with "I Confess", featured on their 1966 debut album, Breakthrough. Their sound was characterized by Richie Unterberger as "a poppier American Them with their prominent organ, wobbly Lesley-fied guitar amplifications and rave-up tempos", later devolving into "a cabaret-ish band with minor national hits to their credit by the end of the 1960s." Like other bands of the era, including Paul Revere & the Raiders, they could be seen wearing colonial outfits. Original embers of the group included;Ray Graffia,Chick James, Pat McBride,Craig Kemp,Wally Kemp, Gerry Van Kollenburg (a.k.a. Jerry Kollenburg). After the groups early releases they were joined by Ronnie Rice.
Wally Kemp would later be replaced by Les Kummel,on bass who was once a member of the Revelles, another Chicago band. The first HIT RECORD for the Colony was "I Confess" Dec.1965. Other hits included 1968's "Love You So Much" and the two biggest records the band ever recorded; "I Will Always Think About You" and 1969's "Things I'd Like to Say".
